THE DOWNGRADE
About
The Downgrade: A War Manual Against Apostasy gathers C. H. Spurgeon’s writings from the Downgrade Controversy, one of the most urgent battles of nineteenth-century evangelical Christianity. These articles were not written as detached history. They were written as alarms from a watchman who saw doctrinal decay spreading through the churches and refused to remain silent.
Spurgeon warned that when churches loosen their grip on the authority of Scripture, the atonement of Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, the reality of judgment, and the necessity of true gospel preaching, they do not remain safely neutral. They descend. The downgrade begins with small compromises, but it ends with a different religion altogether. In Spurgeon’s own words, “A new religion has been initiated, which is no more Christianity than chalk is cheese.”
This collection includes Spurgeon’s key Downgrade writings from The Sword and the Trowel, including:
- “The Down Grade”
- “Another Word Concerning the Down-Grade”
- “Our Reply to Sundry Critics and Enquirers”
- “The Case Proved”
- “Restoration of Truth and Revival”
- “The Baptist Union Censure”
- “Progressive Theology”
- “Current Religious Perils”
- “Attempts at the Impossible”
- “Questions for ‘Down Grade’ Doubters”
- “This Must Be a Soldiers’ Battle”
- “Mr. Spurgeon’s Confession of Faith”
- “A Sermon for the Time Present”
The original contents trace the controversy from 1887 through 1891, showing Spurgeon’s sustained defense of “the faith once delivered to the saints.”
This edition presents the Downgrade Controversy as a warning and a tool for modern readers. Spurgeon’s battle was not merely against open unbelief, but against religious compromise wearing Christian language. He called believers to distinguish between true unity and false peace, reminding the church that “the main need of this age is not compromise, but conscientiousness,” and that truth must be “first pure, then peaceable.”
Republished for pastors, churchmen, serious Christians, and those concerned with the state of the modern church, this volume is a call to stand fast, contend faithfully, and refuse the slow surrender of biblical truth.
